Week 5 Term 2

Hi everyone,
Thanks to those families that joined us for school Mass on a very cold morning. We were unable to present Bibles to our New Entrants as they didn't arrive in time but they will be presented at the next school Mass in Term 3.
Swimming continues this Tuesday and Thursday for Room 2. No pie warmers or lunch orders for Room 2 children on these days please.
Each Tuesday afternoon this term, Room 1 children are lucky to have Grandparent's Reading, where some lovely grandmas give up their time to listen to the children read and play games with them. Each child is assigned a grandma so they get to know them and build up a relationship with them. Please remember to get your child to read their poem to you in the weekend and sign it so that we know it has been read.
Children are working very hard to learn their letter sounds and sight words and we have been giving out many sight word medals - well done!
We were lucky enough to have Stacey Waldron and some fellow firefighters visit us last week to tell us about their Sky Tower Challenge to raise money for leukaemia and blood cancer. The children had many questions and enjoyed trying on the helmets.
Mrs Flannery and Mrs Eastwood are away to Auckland on Tuesday to the Trans Tasman principals conference.
Next weekend is Queen's Birthday, so school is closed on Monday 6th June. Have a great week! Sue, Julie and Rosalie

Measuring Time

In Rooms 1 and 2 we are talking about the measurement of time.  Last week in Room 2, we explored sequences of time and the concept of faster and slower.  We ordered the events in our school day and made a timeline that we put on our Marvellous Maths wall in the classroom.  We also discussed our whole day and made a wrap-around book that showed our activities from getting up in the morning to going to bed at night.  These came home on Friday. The story of the Hare and the Tortoise helped us to understand the idea of faster and slower.  We used counting to compare how long certain activities took to complete, such as tidying the tables, pushing in all the chairs, etc.

This week we will be exploring how to tell time on a clock.  We will practise saying hour times, and then half-hour times.  There are some good games that we'll learn to play that will help us.  Later in the week we'll make our own clocks.
To support your child's learning, you could talk about the times that your family does certain things, especially if it is on the hour, or half-hour.  For example: "Look, it's 8 o'clock, time for bed" or "It's 5.30, time for tea."
Thank you.
