Measuring Time

In Rooms 1 and 2 we are talking about the measurement of time.  Last week in Room 2, we explored sequences of time and the concept of faster and slower.  We ordered the events in our school day and made a timeline that we put on our Marvellous Maths wall in the classroom.  We also discussed our whole day and made a wrap-around book that showed our activities from getting up in the morning to going to bed at night.  These came home on Friday. The story of the Hare and the Tortoise helped us to understand the idea of faster and slower.  We used counting to compare how long certain activities took to complete, such as tidying the tables, pushing in all the chairs, etc.

This week we will be exploring how to tell time on a clock.  We will practise saying hour times, and then half-hour times.  There are some good games that we'll learn to play that will help us.  Later in the week we'll make our own clocks.
To support your child's learning, you could talk about the times that your family does certain things, especially if it is on the hour, or half-hour.  For example: "Look, it's 8 o'clock, time for bed" or "It's 5.30, time for tea."
Thank you.
